Although Belfast Honda is a new name in the bike trade, the family behind the venture are certainly no stranger to the motorcycle business. David is the third generation of the Portadown based Allen family to sell bikes. While bikers will know or remember them from Allens Honda in Portadown, they're not the first members of their family to sell bikes in Belfast.
Two uncles of Tim blazed the way years ago. Jim operated a motorcycle business from premises on Belfast's Great Victoria Street. He styled himself as 'Jim Allen, the Motorbike King' and displayed this slogan on litter baskets, vans, billboards and flashing signs on the top of cars.
Tragically, Jim was to die in the 70s in a plane crash on the family farm at Portadown. He was one of five brothers who had followed their father, John, into the cattle dealing business and later all moved on to retailing bikes and cars. One brother sold cars in Belfast, another in Cheltenham and a third, Bob, bought and sold bikes from a showroom in South Belfast for many years before retiring. George, Tim's father and the youngest brother, operated the multi-franchise Automart at Portadown. With Tim he opened a combined Honda bike and car dealership on a six-acre site at Allens Honda, Portadown. The family-owned and operated Honda bike business continues there today with Tim's other son, Andrew, as dealer principal. The five Allen brothers are all dead, George being the last to go. Tim was a very competitive and successful kart, saloon and formula car racer. He also was an early sponsor and supporter of Joey Dunlop. He toured France on a bike last summer and his two sons also ride.
