How often do you replace your helmet?

According to a survey of 1,000* active bikers carried out by Carole Nash and Motorcycle Monthly, close to 400,000 UK motorcyclists are wearing crash helmets that “need replaced” according to industry experts.

Many people, including 62% of those surveyed, would not replace their helmet unless they had been in an accident. An additional 22% said they wouldn’t replace their helmet if their current one “looked fine”.

These are not good mentalities according to experts who believe that no matter how safe your helmet may look, it still needs replaced every 5 years. This is due to degradations of glues and resins along with wear and tear that substantially reduces the performance of the most vital part of your motorcycle safety gear. Even if you drop your helmet you could risk some unseen damage that could seriously compromise the integrity of the helmet’s safety.

The good news is that 45% of you will initially spend more than £200 to purchase a safe lid. So at least safety is put first during the initial spend on your new stylish helmet. However style should not always be at the top of your priorities. It was found that 38% will choose a fashionable yet hard to see black helmet ahead of the more visible blues and yellows.

So next time you are getting set of a ride and go to put on your helmet, think about it! Do you need to replace it? We know they are not exactly cheap pieces of kit, but surely you would rather be safe than sorry.

At Belfast Honda Motorcycles, we have a great selection of helmets in all sizes and designs suitable for all types of rider along with a huge range of clothing and accessories. So if you think it’s time for a change your lid or any other piece of your gear, come down and see what we have to offer.
